Sleep Reset vs Stellar Sleep: an honest comparison

Both are real CBT-I programs and both cost real money. They differ on what you are buying, who holds you accountable, and how the bill arrives. There are also two cheaper paths that neither ad mentions.

The short version

Sleep Reset: you are paying for the coach, so judge the coach

Sleep Reset's pitch is human accountability: a named coach who reads your sleep diary and messages you through the program. When it works, that is worth paying for. Adherence is the whole game in CBT-I, and a person expecting your check-in keeps you in the program through the hard weeks.

The complaints on r/insomnia target exactly that promise. Users describe coaches who read as scripted rather than personal, and replies that took more than a day and stayed vague. A day-late scripted answer is the worst of both worlds: you paid the human premium and got chatbot latency.

Watch the shape of the bill, not only the number. The first week is $19, and after that it renews monthly at $297 until you stop it. A six-week program on that plan is not a one-time purchase, it is a subscription you have to remember to end.

Stellar Sleep: gamification sounds silly and works

Stellar drops the human coach, charges a good deal less, and spends the difference on keeping you engaged. You grow a sleep garden by completing sessions. One r/insomnia user described the garden as seemingly silly and more effective for them than a lousy personal coach, and stayed in the program because of it.

The tradeoff: when your schedule needs judgment, a wake time that will not fit your shift, or a week that went sideways, there is nobody to negotiate with. Users also report discount offers appearing when they try to cancel.

The part neither ad mentions

Most people who quit CBT-I quit in the phase where time in bed gets cut and you feel worse before you feel better (the sleep window, explained). Whichever program you pick, the purchase only pays off if it carries you through weeks 2 and 3. So pick the accountability style you will actually obey: a human expecting your message, or a streak you will not break.

And calibrate honestly. The efficacy figures in the marketing come from trials where a trained clinician delivered the program. Most people improve meaningfully in those trials, which also means some do everything right and do not. Before you spend a few hundred dollars, read the cancellation terms and know what renews.

If money is tight

The protocol itself is public. Say Good Night to Insomnia teaches the same core program for about $15, and the VA's free Insomnia Coach app is a standalone five-week plan that handles the diary and the schedule math on its own. If you are already seeing a clinician, their companion app is CBT-i Coach, which is built to sit alongside sessions rather than replace them. What you give up going free is the thing that makes paid programs work: someone or something pulling you through the two hard weeks. If you have got the discipline, start there tonight.

Where Still fits

Still is the version those threads keep asking for: real CBT-I with a guide that answers at 3am instead of tomorrow, for as long as your program runs, schedule flexibility argued from your own diary, and one visible price. $79, paid once in your app store. Nothing renews, nothing to cancel, and no quiz between you and the number.
